Cpl Tavi F. “Chipper” Helin, 58, of Ma
y-nard, Mass. He served during the Vietnam War
and was a runner who completed the Boston
Marathon.
James Heyden, 45, of Tomahawk, Wis.
William L. “Bill” Hissong, 82, of Dayton,
Ohio. He was a WW II veteran who saw action on Peleliu and Okinawa. He later served
in North China.
LtCol Jim Kean, 66, of Barnstable, Mass.
He was one of the last men on the roof of the
U.S. Embassy awaiting helicopter evacuation
atthefallof Saigon(Operation Frequent Wind).
As commanding officer of Company C, Marine Security Guard Bn and Ground Support
Force Commander,U.S.Embassy Compound,
he was a key player in the embassy evacuation
on April 30, 1975, which saw the exit of approximately 1,000 remaining Americans and
several thousand Vietnamese in advance of
approaching North Vietnamese forces.
Stuart Kimball of Gilbert, Ariz. He served
in Vietnam during 1962.
Cpl John B. Kreig, 84, of Elwin, Ill. He
was a WW II veteran who fought on Saipan,
Guam and Okinawa.
Cpl Utley S. Kronenberg Sr., 67, of St.
Cloud, Minn. He served from 1958 to 1962.
He was a life member of the Valhalla Det.,
MCL.
William D. Langley, 65, of Mattoon, Ill.
He was a Marine Vietnam War veteran who
also served in the Army.
Gerard P. “Gerry” Laviano, 78, of Hudson, Mass. He was a Korean War veteran and
retired sales manager for Armstrong Co. He
was a former chairman of the Hudson School
Committee.
Danny D. LeMaster Sr., 59, of Foristell, Mo.
Cpl Oscar Lerner, 82, of Sunny Hills, Fla.
He was a WW II veteran who served with Co B,
4th Motors, 24th Marines, 4thMarDiv and
fought on Iwo Jima. He went on to be a volu
nteer Guardian Ad Litem(advocateofabusedand
neglected children) for the state of Florida and
a substitute teacher at Chipley High School.
SSgt Gilbert C. Lloyd, 84, of Shell Knob,
Mo. He was a WW II veteran who served with
the 5thMarDiv on Iwo Jima. He was a member of the 5thMarDiv Assn. and the MCA.
Maj Donald H. Magee, 72, of San Diego.
In high school, he was a pitcher on the baseball team, a two-time All-League selection in
football and president of his senior class. In
college, he was a four-year letterman q
uarter-back as well as captain of the team his senior
year. He was a member of San Diego State’s
first rugby team, which won the Southern California Rugby Union Championship in 1958.
During Marine officer training, he was the
top candidate in his class. He also was the
quarterback for the Quantico football team.
He transferred to MCRD San Diego where he
played on the football team, and in his final
game in 1962 led his team to defeat San Diego
State at the Aztec Bowl.
He was a qualified parachutist with more
than 100 jumps. He once survived a 100-foot
fall from a hovering helicopter with no more
than a broken leg.
He later became Pala Indian Reservation’s
Tribal Administrator and director of the All
Mission Indian Housing Authority.
John McClaskey, 86, of St. Louis. He was
a WW II veteran.
GySgt Steven V. Mellendorf, 49, of Moline,
Ill. He served from 1976 to 1998 with tours in
Japan and Korea. He was a heavy-duty diesel
engine instructor at Camp Lejeune, N.C., and
MCAS El Toro, Calif. He was later employed
at Martin Equipment, Rock Island.
Cpl William F. Murphy, 85, in Orono,
Maine. He was a WW II veteran who served
with A/1/29, 6thMarDiv on Okinawa where
he was wounded June 11, 1945. He recovered
after nearly three years in various hospitals.
He went on to become a manager for Paramount Theaters.
Sgt G. Edward “Ed” Noeth, 77, of St. Louis.
He was a POW during the Korean War.
SSgt Charles E. “Chuckeddie/Charley”
Owens, 37, of Ferron, Utah. He was killed in
a motorcycle accident in Joshua Tree, Calif.
He was the drum major for the MCAGCC
Band, Twentynine Palms, Calif. He enlisted in
1990 as a bandsman, and as a French horn instrumentalist served with the 2dMarDiv, Camp
Lejeune, N.C.; the Parris Island and Quantico
Marine bands.
He was awarded the Golden Mace award in
1999, which is given to the highest-scoring
drummajorstudentofthe Armed Forces School
of Music”s Ceremonial Conductor/Drum Major
Course.
Herman J. Paradise, 87, of Manchester,
Conn. A former member of the Civil Conservation Corps, he was a WW II veteran who
fought on New Guinea, New Britain, Cape
Gloucester and Peleliu. He later became commandant of the Frank J. Mansfield Det., MCL.
Virgil L. Patrick, 80, of Ohio. He was a
WW II veteran.
Cpl Ronald L. Petersen, 73, of Riverside,
Calif.
SgtMaj Kenneth J. Reigner, 86, of Tempe,
Ariz. He enlisted in 1940 and became an aircraft mechanic. During WW II, he served on
Guadalcanal and returned to the States as a
master sergeant. In 1945, he was selected for
Naval Flight Training and became an enlisted
naval aviator in 1947. He flew Corsairs and
F9F jets in 1949. He flew 53 combat missions
as a fighter-bomber pilot over Korea. He also
flew jets from four Navy carriers and eventually retired in 1962 with 22 years’ service.
His awards include the Air Medal with gold
star.
TSgt Candelario “Candy” Rellin, 77, of
Moreno Valley, Calif. He served in the Air
Force and the Corps.
Harold E. Robinson, 85, of Redlands, Calif.
He was a WW II veteran of Guadalcanal and
later served in the Korean War. He was chief
of surveys for C&M Engineering in San Bernardino for 40 years.
John Rossi, 84, of San Francisco. He was
a WW II veteran who served as a Paramarine
in the Solomon Islands, on Guadalcanal, T
u-lagi, the Gilbert Islands, Choiseul, Vella
LaVella and Iwo Jima.
