and said, “Pa Pa, I enlisted in the Marine
Corps.” Needless to say, I was proud.
In September 2007, Jared reported to
Parris Island, S.C. Jared was doing well and
conforming to Marine Corps life until October. While performing his morning physical exercises Jared was bitten by fire ants.
He learned that he was very allergic to their
bites. Jared was rushed to sick bay where
the doctors began to minister to his needs.
Jared was assigned to a medical hold
platoon for several weeks after which he
was advised that he was to be discharged
and returned home to New Jersey.
Jared didn’t waste any time. He reached
out to his hometown doctor and began a
series of allergy shots. The shots were successful. Jared again contacted his recruiter,
reporting what had occurred since his
discharge and saying that he was ready to
return to Parris Island and resume his training to become a Marine.
On April 30, 2008, Jared was cleared
to reenlist. On May 12, he reported to recruit training.
Jared graduated Aug. 8 and is now referred to as a United States Marine.

Editorial Irish Pennants
World War II Marine Aubrey Cole of
Abilene, Texas, called to bring my attention
to a serious error in the September issue.
Mr. Cole landed with Fourth Marine
Division on Iwo Jima. I really enjoyed our
conversation—after he politely stood me
at attention to point out my grave error on
page 65 of the September issue and we
moved on to other subjects. In the first
sentence of the review of the book, “Iwo
Jima: World War II Veterans Remember
the Greatest Battle of the Pacific,” I erred.
Our Leatherneck book review incorrectly identifies the three Marine divisions fighting that battle as the 1st, 3d
and 5th Marine divisions. The 4thMarDiv
performed magnificently in that great battle, along with the 3d and 5th divisions. The
1stMarDiv did not, as it was preparing to
participate in the assault on Okinawa.
The book correctly identifies the Marine units. This was an editorial error and
one seriously regretted. I apologize for
any inconvenience and embarrassment.
