Richard F. Bower, 81, of Montpelier, Vt.
He enlisted in the Corps after graduating from
high school. Later, after retiring from Central
Vermont Public Service, he returned to school
and graduated from Norwich University in
1999.
SSgt Dennis C. Connor, 85, of Ellisville,
Mo. He enlisted in 1939 and was a member
of H&S Btry, 1st Defense Bn on Wake Island
when the Japanese attacked. After his garrison surrendered, he was sent to China to work
in a prison camp near Shanghai and later at
Camp #3 in Fukuoka, Japan. He was a life
member of the Pvt George Phillips Det. #1214,
MCL, Ballwin, Mo.
Sgt Martin F. De Wan, 71, in Chicago. He
served with Wpns/1/3, 3dMarDiv, 1954-57,
and was stationed at South Camp Fuji, Japan.
He was a member of the 3dMarDiv Assn.,
MCL and the MCA.
PFC Kenneth W. Dobie, 86, of International Falls, Minn. A WW II veteran, he served
with F/2/24, 4thMarDiv at Roi-Namur, Saipan,
Tinian and Iwo Jima and was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds on Saipan.
Sgt Harry D. “David” Elms Jr., 62, of Triangle, Va. He enlisted in 1969. He went on to
work for more than 20 years in his family
business, “The Marine Shop,” Quantico, Va.,

SgtMaj Albert L. Frander, 89, of Philadelphia. He served from 1941 to 1969. He was a
member of the MarDet, USS Langley (CVL- 27)
during WW II. He also served in the Korean
War. He was awarded the Purple Heart while
serving with H&S Co, 3/9, 3dMarDiv from
1967 to 1968.
LCpl Eugene C. “Bucky” Funderburke
Jr. in Sumter, S.C. He served from 1968 to
1970, including duty at Parris Island, S.C.,
and Camp Lejeune, N.C.
LtCol David B. Gregory, 70, of Fernan-dina Beach, Fla. He served more than 22 years.
He was assigned to the Military Assistance Advisory Team in Taiwan; MCB Camp Butler,
Okinawa, Japan; MCDEC Quantico, Va; Marine Barracks Key West, Fla., as commanding
officer; and Headquarters, U.S. Marine Corps.
Recently, he retired as vice president of Amelia
Island Company and as director of Amelia Island Management.
LtCol Cloyd V. Hines in Jacksonville, N.C.
He was a WW II veteran who, as a corporal,
fought on Guadalcanal and won the Silver Star
for action Sept. 13-14, 1942. He later served
